Our History
We praise God for his work in us since 1843.
The Church of the Ascension began its journey on November 28, 1843, when a small group of concerned local Episcopalians met for the purpose of organizing a congregation in Westminster, which at the time was a small village with a population of approximately 500. In May 1844, the Diocesan Convention, held in Baltimore, voted to grant the formal organization of the “Parish of Ascension.” Fundraising began and in August 1844 ground was broken on our Stone Church. In May 1846, on Ascension Day, Church of the Ascension was consecrated.
Stone Church "Then"
This original building, now affectionately referred to as the Stone Church, exemplifies the Neo-Gothic architectural style advocated by the Ecclesiological Society in the 19th century. The Stone Church has been modified only slightly in the past 170-plus years, and is recognized as an historic property by the Maryland Historical Trust.
Sunday School
About our Sunday School
Our Sunday School program is led by our fabulous teachers Carrie Goff and Roberta Gore, who together bring a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and pure fun to the classroom.
Please join us at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays to be a part of the action!

Foundations Sunday School (Grades K - 6)
We will look at "Hollywood Heroes" and how they compare to the ultimate hero- Jesus. Some of the heroes we will look at are Captain America, Iron Man, Harry Potter, Batman and Wonder Woman and what qualities they share with Jesus. We will learn about heroes from the Bible along the way like Moses, Joshua, Abraham, Samson and others. We will learn where to find the stories of these heroes in the Bible and what the Bible teaches us about being like Jesus. We will explore real life/every day heroes like Mother Teresa and why her work made her a hero. We will develop our Christian armor - belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the spirit.
Explorations Sunday School (Grades 7 - 12)
The Explorations Sunday School class will reflect on 12 lessons of faith for teens. Ranging from 'Building a Sincere and Awesome Relationship with God', to 'Getting Beyond the Self-Esteem Wars', these lessons provide real life opportunities for teens to see and practice a faith they've built for themselves.
Teens in Explorations also have the opportunity to assist in leading Children's Chapel on Sunday mornings during the 10:15 am worship service!
